Point one. Always set goals. What do you want to achieve? Before you begin any marketing activities you should know what you want to get out of it. At a minimum, when it comes to SEO, your goals should include increasing your sites search engine rank and driving more traffic to your site via organic search engine results. Additional considerations might include generating leads and sales. However, these will have to be closely monitored if you want to attribute leads and sales to SEO activities.
As you set goals, there are three things that you need to keep in mind.
- Recognize, especially when it comes to SEO, that they may take time to achieve. Goals achieved over night are not really goals at all.
- Stick to your goals. Although we will talk about revisions, it is important you do not soften your goals just to soften them.
- Always write them down. Writing down goals helps keep you accountable.
Point two. Constantly revisit your goals. Are you meeting your targets? Goals without measurement and reflection are useless. Don't stop there. If you are not meeting them dig a little to find out why? Did you execute your campaign correctly? Were they too aggressive? Reflection and measurement should lead to adjustments. Note: Adjustments can go in both directions... If you are constantly beating your goals, maybe you set yours too low.
